Hey friends,

Welcome back to Writing Prompts &, where I share with you a writing prompt from one of the many writing classes I’ve taken over the years and the zero draft it inspired.

Today’s writing prompt comes from a Creative Writing 101 course I took in May of 2020.

A little seaside town at the bottom of the French Riviera.

What’s the writing prompt?

Writing Prompt: Describe a memorable meal

This is what I wrote.

It has taken us three hours to drive from Barcelona to the southern most tip of the French Riviera.

We were tired and irritable, snapping at one another for any perceived inconvenience. The heat was oppressive. Thick and wet like the air itself was sweating.

I wanted silence. I wanted peace as we sat down for dinner.

I ordered a glass of the house white and the Mussels Roquefort. The wine was cold, crisp, transcendent. I could no longer hear what was happening around me.

I snapped the mussel in half at the hinge and used the shell like a spoon, dragging my teeth against the smooth flesh.

One moment was spent in the tangy bitter bliss of the rich bleu cheese. The next was spent in the savory salt of broth and brine.

A Little Background

During May of 2020, I spent a lot of time in my memories. This one in particular was from a trip I took in 2015 to Barcelona.

My friend, Sparkle, and I rented an apartment in the Gothic Quarter for the month of July, and my friend, Sam, came to visit. He was the one who drove us to the South of France.

It was a beautiful drive, but we were hot and tired. And by the end, we were all a bit…ornary.

Enjoying a glass of the house white.

But we sat down to our meal, and the food and wine were so good that I blocked out how annoyed we were with each other. I didn’t care that it was sweltering. It’s like I blacked out and was catapulted into another dimension.

Of course, the car ride home was fine until we got to a toll booth and Sam and I got into a fight over how to go through the toll. Not a great moment.

But that meal and that summer are nothing short of memorable for me.

Final Thoughts

That’s it for now, folks.

What is your most memorable meal? I’d love to know! Leave it in the comments.

Until next time. Wishing you a week of the most delicious meals.
